Smashing Glass Tray
Make crime pay with a cool dresser valet made of recycled car window glass. This coin catcher is a square wooden tray featuring a shatterd glass mosaic. We gathered the broken glass from a high-theft parking lot. No kidding! Then we poured hi-gloss resin over the shards to create a smooth, glassy surface.
This is the actual tray we made for our column in The Wave magazine. It would make a terrific gift for a Dad or a Grad. Got a hard-to-shop-for brother? Bet he doesn't have one of these!

For Halloween, we concocted a creepy silver wooden tray with spooky spiders in a sea of red and black tiles. The tiles are made of lovely vitreous glass. They are covered in clear, hi-gloss resin. But before it cured, we nestled big black rubber spiders in the surface. Creepy and cool!
12½”x12½”x2½”.
We love the hand-wrought look of mosaics, especially when the embedments are as eyecatching as these metal typewriter key beads. We set them off by painting a wooden tray rich copper, then we placed the keys among a bed of turquoise and copper vitreous glass tiles. Crystal clear resin lets the color shine through, making the letters and tiles appear to be suspended in time.
A wonderful gift for the man – or woman – who has everything and needs a place to put it!
